1895 16 October - Lincolnshire Chronicle

"James Babbington, labourer, of Stageden, Bedfordshire, was charged at March Petty Sessions with stealing a purse, value 2d., and £4 2s,10d. in money, the property of Robert Shearhod, labourer, March, on the 12th inst. - It appears that both defendant and prosecutor worked on the farm of Mr. Johnson, March, and both slept together.  After prosecutor got to sleep on Saturday night defendant ransacked his clothes and other property, took every farthing the man possessed, including his yearly wage which had been drawn during the day, and decamped in time for the mail train to Peterborough the same night.  Defendant was apprehended at the Racehorse Inn, Peterborough, during Sunday by P.C. Newell, or March, but only £1 0s.10d was found in his possession.  Defendant was remanded till Tuesday".
