1847 15 January - Stamford Mercury

Heading: Inquest

"On Monday last an inquest was held at the Greyhound inn, at Eye Green, near Peterborough, on the body of John Randall, aged 13 years.  It appeared that the deceased, on the previous Friday afternoon, took the gun of another lad who was scaring birds, and which was charged with powder and put into it some gravel stones, and then ran away with it, and in endeavouring to put the gun through a gap in the hedge he placed the muzzle against his body, when it went off, and his bowels actually protruded, and he died ater 12 hours' agony.  The lad whose gun it was was only five yards behind him, and had a narrow escape.  Verdict, accidental death. - A mischievous and most dangerous practice prevails amongst boys of putting stones into their guns. - The farmers in whose employ they are should exert their authority in putting a stop to it.  They are sent into the fields to scare, not to shoot, birds.  The system, if allowed, affords a fine school or young poachers".
